My role at Overcome is to see and manage clients. As well as participate in triaging new potential clients onboarding.
Motivations
What excited me the most about this internship was the opportunity of experience it gives. I knew I wanted to work more helping people but actually apply what I have learned in the real world.

My goals at Overcome have been to gain confidence and gain more practice in therapeutic skills. I wanted more hands-on experience, and it has been that. Also working closely with other coaches for insight and guidance has been amazing.

Summarising it All

Alyssa Sotelo
Role & Responsibilities
I am a Clinical Psychology Intern who completed intensive training and was cleared to meet low and medium risk clients. I also acted as cohort leader for a week and led daily meetings, as well as involved myself in two research projects (gratitude / retention project). I was also a senior coach for the future cohorts after me who were completing their training period.
Motivations
I was excited by the prospect of learning how to apply CBT / ACT / MI techniques to actual clients as it would support my career journey, and is an important aspect of going into clinical psychology, but not something we learn or practice at university, so doing it with Overcome gave me insight into clinical pathway early on in my career.
Goals & Development
I wanted to improve my communication skills as a coach to client and be able to be more assured about my skills in helping people in a clinical setting. The training period allowed me to practice my skills a lot before putting it into real-life practice, so by the time I was meeting clients, I felt confident in my abilities and was able to trust myself and give my full attention into helping my clients in a way that was best for them.
I also wanted to gain research experience as I am not very confident in my data analysis skills, and now I have strengthened these skills by working on the data analysis section for the gratitude project, and even helping in leading the retention project with other people from my cohort.
The Experience
Everyone is amazing and I feel like joining Overcome has welcomed me into a family of people who are like-minded. I didn't expect to make so many friends and memories in a remote internship, but even the last daily meeting was sentimental even though most of us are staying onboard to finish seeing our clients. It was nice to relate to people who are also on their journey towards clinical psych, as I don't have many people in real life that want to go in this direction. But also seeing clients can be mental challenging for anyone, regardless of experience, so it was really warming to receive affirmations from people from my cohort and outside as well. The senior coaches were so lovely and reassuring, and the future cohorts I trained are so gifted. Special shout out to Kishah, Chimango, Angel, John, and Helen who do so much to support us and are always so friendly when I message them with difficult clients or other outside dilemmas. Everyone is so warm and I'm really glad I got to meet everyone within Overcome :)
Takeaways & Recommendations
I think on a personal level, I was able to learn to set boundaries and prioritise myself more because I used to accept more work than I could do and just overwork myself, but nobody made me feel guilty for taking a break or taking things slower, because everyone has their own pace at Overcome. My confidence definitely strengthened when I could see improvement with my clients so quickly, and even if there were setbacks, I'm now able to accept that I shouldn't blame myself for everything and people respond differently to coaching. Also being able to think on my feet because sometimes clients will say things that you don't expect or prepare for, but not panicking and taking a moment to think then and there really helped me to clear my head and help them the best I can. I would recommend this internship and have recommended it to some friends who study psychology and want to gain clinical experience outside of what we're taught at university.
Summarising it All
I'm so glad that I joined Overcome for the experience, but also for the friends, and I can't thank Overcome enough for allowing me to experience this!
Amy Lynn Degner
Role & Responsibilities
My main duty is seeing clients and managing caseloads.
Motivations
The opportunity to take on clients so early on is unique and gives individuals from a psychology background great exposure to real life therapeutic situations.
Goals & Development
I was eager to develop my coaching skills and delve deeper into therapeutic approaches such as CBT and ACT. The training programme and ongoing clinical support allowed me to grow as a coach and provide excellent support to my clients.
The Experience
My experience has been very positive, as we have been given autonomy throughout and were able to decide on our workload and define individual goals.
Takeaways & Recommendations
This internship has provided me with my first practical clinical experience and has helped me become a confident coach that can connect theory to practice. This experience has already helped me get a position as an Assistant Psychologist and has given me perspective on my future career.

Carolina Bosco
Role & Responsibilities
I currently am a clinical intern at Overcome. My tasks include seeing clients, training new interns, helping with the triaging and contributing to a nicotine addiction research study.
Motivations
Overcome gave me the opportunity to have hands on experience with real clients. It's so rare to find similar online internships, especially with such a worldwide reach.
Goals & Development
My goal was to gain experience with helping clients and feeling more confident in my therapeutic skills. I currently see 11 clients and I love working with them.
The Experience
At Overcome we have great flexibility and freedom in choosing our own times, but at the same time it's so easy to seek support and guidance when needed. Everyone is so kind, passionate and supportive, it's truly an amazing environment to work in.
Takeaways & Recommendations
I would totally recommend this internship to others. Overcome is truly an amazing organisation, I love their mission of making coaching accessible and free. I know so many people who really need help and support but can't afford it, and Overcome allows them to seek help without worrying about the financial aspect. This experience taught me how to be more confident and how to constantly seek resources and ways to improve my skills.
Summarising it All
Overcome is an amazing opportunity for anyone who is struggling with the job search and really wants to start practicing what they've learned during their studies.
Crystal Liyadi
Role & Responsibilities
My main duty is to see and support low risk clients.
Motivations
What excites me about this internship is the opportunity to practice and enhance clinical skills. Overcome provided an opportunity for students to get a sense of how the world of clinical psychology may look like and understand whether this may be a career path that we would like to commit to. And with a mission to increase access to free psychological support, not just limited to the UK but around the world, I was excited about the possibility of contributing to such cause.
Goals & Development
When I first joined, my goal was to see 5-10 clients by the end of the cohort internship period. However, I have encountered some challenges during the assessment periods which led to only seeing 1 client at the end of the internship period. Though it did not go according to plan, I have learned so much about myself. It was hard for me to not pass assessments and at times, it would feel so much easier to give up. However, with the support from senior coaches and Angel, I wanted to keep trying as Overcome has only reassured my passion in clinical psychology.
To put it briefly, now I know that I need to work on my confidence, such that I am able to take on the more leading role when in sessions especially when clients feel a bit lost. I am also reminded that I am resilient and this will be something that I will continue to be as I pursue a career in clinical psychology. I still have a lot to learn and am excited for further opportunities as I extend my internship at Overcome.
Although I have only seen 1 client, I am now more confident in my basic therapeutic skills along with writing summary session emails and preparing for the sessions.
The Experience
My experience so far has definitely exceeded my expectations. Despite it being online, everyone was so kind and supportive - I knew that if I reached out to other interns/senior coaches/Angel and John, they would be happy to support and answer my questions. I loved the work environment, everyone was warm but we kept each other accountable. I especially enjoyed the group supervisions as we discuss client sessions and suggests different ideas. It was nice to see that everyone had different styles of coaching and it was nice to pick out from each other.
Takeaways & Recommendations
My time at Overcome has taught me so much more about the clinical world, but also myself. I have a better understanding of what it takes to become a mental health coach, beyond the theories learnt. As mentioned previously, I also have more confidence in myself and better equipped with basic therapy skills. I would 100% recommend this to psychology graduates and/or psychology students looking to gain clinical experience.
Summarising it All
Overcome internship is a BIG stepping stone as I build a career in clinical psychology; I have developed clinical skills more than the 2 years I have spent in university and 1 on a research placement year.
David Boudville
Role & Responsibilities
My main duty is seeing clients and providing CBT/CBT-I, MI, and some ACT for mild to moderate mental health issues. I am also helping to design new materials for Overcome's CBT syllabus, which I and some other interns are currently wrapping up by recording/editing some example-videos.
Motivations
As the example says, I was indeed demoralised: most ads made it clear they wanted someone with experience, even for local entry-level jobs. Overcome caught my eye because I've always been interested in coaching, and they made it clear they'd offer experience similar to an assistant psychologist's.
Goals & Development
I wanted to test myself as much as possible in giving therapy/coaching sessions to clients, to see if I really had the chops for practical work as a clinical psychologist.
The training program in the first two weeks was harrowingly tough, but I adored how much I learned in them - not in terms of theory, but how PRACTICAL it all was. I was very nervous and self-sabotaged my own work with at least two clients at the start, but since then I've seen myself visibly improve and start acting like a seasoned coach in most sessions. I also feel really happy with my CBT skills now, since I always hated how theory-heavy it was in university; actually practicing it and writing a course on it has really helped superbly!
This has increased my confidence a ton in writing application letters, and I feel comfortable asking for a lot of clients: I currently work with only fourteen, and I intend to ask for about 20 more (since most will not reply to contact-emails, this will really only increase my workload by about ten). Helping suggest person-centred scheduling practices also boosted my confidence in my own 'person-centred' approach to work-life in general.
The Experience
I really enjoy that the co-founders aren't shy to ask a lot of us but will also take time to work/meet directly with us. This ensures the maximum improvement, and I felt very confident in my growth and skills thanks to that. And of course, I loved the kinds of people I ended up working with as co-interns: really great folks!
The only thing I didn't love is that I didn't get hired in the end, although to be fair I expected that might be the case. As it is, I feel like they did really encourage me to do well and excel even outside of Overcome, like they're genuinely interested in seeing where my career goes. I'll very likely be keeping in touch!
Takeaways & Recommendations
My time at Overcome has taught me that I have the stuff to be a pretty good psychologist and/or counselling psychologist. I feel I've finally done a satisfactory amount (for me) to reconcile all the theory-heavy stuff I had to study and the more practical elements I've always enjoyed. It's also helped me develop a bit of a philosophical/religious perspective: I really see now that, while we try to regulate psychology and treat it as an exact science, there really MUST be lots of room for creativity and art (so to speak). I would definitely recommend this experience to any psychology graduates, since the work-experience definitely helps a lot with becoming more 'hire-able' and makes you feel more confident (though it'll be rough at first, like all practical work).
Summarising it All
Four months at Overcome taught me more about CBT than an entire university course did, and way more about professional work than my last, formally 'clinical' internship did.
Dominic White
Role & Responsibilities
My main duty is seeing clients and supporting other interns as they develop their skills
Motivations
It was a structured approach, providing both practical skills and experience
Goals & Development
I wanted to understand how the theoretical application of psychology could support clients.
I was provided with structured and well supported education and insights. So far I have had 52 sessions with clients.
What exceeded my expectations was the access to support clients from around the world who had different needs and to have some level of flexibility in how best to support them.
The Experience
It is a great program with a great team. There is real enthusiasm, care and expertise from the core team. The colleagues I joined with and have since met are real professionals but also extremely good people. This reflects the rigorous selection process - well done Lauren!
Takeaways & Recommendations
I would highly recommend this internship to anyone wanting to build practical skills and have the opportunity to support clients across many different countries and with different challenges.
I have learnt a huge amount from the Overcome team, and from clients I have worked with. Having looked a lot of different approaches, I haven't found a better or smarter win/win that Overcome, for its coaches and its clients.

Takeaways & Recommendations
I have gained friendships and a new appreciation for the role of a therapist. The internship has allowed me to explore what it is like to be a therapist and has helped me confirm to myself that this is the role for me in the future. I have really enjoyed the emphasis on the team element of the internship, forming strong relationships with mentors and my fellow interns has made the whole experience much richer as I have learnt so much from each other and have felt very comfortable to reach out for help and support when needed. I would definitely recommend the internship and already have recommended it to some of my friends!

I have gained confidence, made close friends, helped so many people and have felt supported every step of the way. Overcome has so many amazing people, it is a supportive and kind charity but really pushes you to be the best you can.
Takeaways & Recommendations
Overcome has helped me not only in my professional life but I also feel I have gained skills that carry over into my personal life: communication, leadership, listening, organisation, teamwork and many more. The connections I have made with my fellow interns are friendships that will go on.

I also help in the recruitment process where I conduct interviews with potential interns who would like to join the organization.
Motivations
Before joining Overcome, I was interested in seeing the title "Psychology Intern". I thought to myself, this organization seems to know what psychology graduates go through during their career path. The job description really stated all the tasks a psychology graduate would dream of as part of their path to be certified clinical psychologists. What excited me the most when I first decided to apply is the fact that I would be having my own clients after finishing the training.
Goals & Development
I was eager to see how theoretical principles are applied in a clinical setting. I was interested in the cultural diversity of the clients since they are from all over the world. I was interested in gaining one-to-one experience as a psychology graduate.

I would call this organization a safe space. The mental health coaches I was working with were amazing. The team was very supportive, always willing to help, and . We were really there for each other, learning from one another, and always collaborating to ensure the best services. I always felt understood, heard, appreciated, respected, and never judged. I am a behavioural change and mental health coach, with my main responsibility is coaching low and medium risk clients . I have participated in one sleep study research project.
Motivations
As a practicing personal development and business coach, I feel that mental wellbeing is a key issue to be addressed, and often ignored, when coaching clients. This opportunity was one I was drawn to in order to gain formal training in mental health coaching, while being exposed to a global network.
Goals & Development
My primary focus when joining this program, was to be fully immersed in learning the mental health coaching techniques which create behavioural change.
The detail and intensity of the training was unforeseen and unexpected, yet deeply rewarding and inspiring. The level and depth of the knowledge base in mental health was truly informative and life changing.
The passion within Overcome for overcoming mental health issues is truly inspiring - and all involved are commended on their dedication to making a difference.
The Experience
I signed on without any knowledge of the curriculum, the intense and swift learning curve required to complete the first month's program. Even though the pace was hectic and tiring, it was inspiring and educational.
After the initial fears, our cohort became supportive, creating a safe space for everyone to share any problems or self-doubt. It has been inspiring to be a part of this journey with you all.
Takeaways & Recommendations
The main thing, which was one of my goals, was to be able to pause and listen more - thus practicing active listening. I am a work in progress.
I was also introduced to the "righting reflex" of mine which I am more aware of, and am able to now practice active listening instead.
An awareness of both these habits, and the methods provided to change them, have deepened my coaching style and provided a more wholesome coaching method.
I have already recommended this program to other coaches who want to create a deepen experience with their clients.
Summarising it All
Throughout this internship, I was impressed with the level of support extended to all participants. The passion and dedication to this field, given by the founders, and the team leaders, is heartwarming and commendable.

Motivations
I was hoping to gain some clinical experience in the field of psychology, both to see if this is a suitable career path for me, as well as to gain additional therapeutic skills through the training offered in the programme.
Goals & Development
I was hoping to gain skills and confidence in coaching and therapy, as well as experience research in a charity setting. The training programme has given me a set of practical therapeutic skills, and I was able to put these to practice through taking several clients, as well as consolidating them through teaching new interns. I was also able to be involved in research projects within the organisation, with guidance from more experienced members of the research team.

Goals & Development
I had a goal of gaining much more confidence when applying psychological interventions. Both the role-plays and the actual client sessions instilled this confidence into me.
The Experience
I really enjoyed the flexibility and sense of community within the programme despite everything being done remotely. I think more team building or social events outside of our clinical work should be considered as a way to introduce people from different cohorts and other members of the team.
Takeaways & Recommendations
I have gained a new layer of confidence when working with clients which can have such complex problems. This will significantly help when I move on to become an AP within the NHS and have to support assessments and treatments of people with mental health difficulties. Tatiana Garcia
Role & Responsibilities
My main duty is seeing clients and managing caseloads. As a senior coach, I help with the training of new interns by facilitating one on one role-plays, guiding them through MI, CBT and ACT, as well as producing training material. I am also helping out with the triaging of new clients.
Motivations
Before joining Overcome, I struggled to find a job that would enable me to get experience in Mental Health. This role stood out to me, because it allowed new interns to manage a caseload of clients on their own after an intensive 3 week training period. I was impressed that it catered to prospective DClinPsy candidates as well.
Goals & Development
I was eager to gain experience in mental health and therapy. Before joining Overcome, I had no prior experience in this field of psychology.
The rigorous training program and the workshops conducted by team members and industry professionals introduced me to a range of talk therapies and therapeutic skills I knew I would not find elsewhere in such a short timeline. For example, we were introduced to Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and CBT-Insomnia in just three weeks. After intensive assessments, we were then given permission to start seeing low, low/medium and medium risk clients. Although the assessments were difficult, I was grateful for them as it allowed me to receive feedback on areas I needed to improve on before seeing clients of my own.
I’ve also learned how to create training material, facilitate roleplays with new interns, and currently learning how the triaging process works. These were goals that I did not have prior to joining as I did not expect to be able to get this far. However, upon my first week, I knew I wanted to gain this experience as well. I am grateful to Overcome as the team supported me in reaching these goals at an earlier time than I expected.
My goal was to continue volunteering for Overcome for a year. And I have been given the opportunity to do this. Now I am able to further refine the skills I have learned and continue to see new clients. I am excited to continue this role part time as I seek to continue my studies with a masters in mental health. I am eager to be able to apply the knowledge I will gain from my studies to my role in Overcome.
The Experience
My experience has far exceeded my expectations. I love the flexibility we are given in choosing how many clients we want to manage as well as the times that we can have appointments. I love the community and how supportive the team members are. At Overcome, it’s like a family. Everyone is watching out for each other, and encouraging each other to gain new experiences within the company.
Takeaways & Recommendations
From this internship, I gained unrivaled experience. I also gained new friends in the industry who I am so grateful to have met.
This internship supports my professional career, because I am aspiring to get onto the DClinPsy in the future. This internship enabled me to gain experience required for jobs like an assistant psychologist. The values at Overcome also align with my personal beliefs and values. I believe in helping people for a cause. And Overcome just does that by providing low cost and free therapy to people in LMICs who face several accessibility barriers for mental health help.
I would recommend this internship to people who just graduated from their Bachelor’s or Masters, and looking to gain experience.

Uzmaa Mohammed Aijaz
Role & Responsibilities
My role at overcome is seeing multiple clients and helping them with issues they are currently experiencing. I am responsible for maintaining confidentiality and keeping tracks of different clients profile and their session notes.
Motivations
The most exciting part before joining in was the fact that it provided training into ACT, CBT and was acting as potential clinical hours for PhD or clinical supervisions. It was starting step to see if a career as clinical psychologist or mental health coach is well suited.
Goals & Development
My main goal was to expose myself to actual clients and specialised training in mental health. To gain confidence and empathy while talking to clients and helping them process their emotions. At the moment I have seen clients with grief, procrastination and anxiety, this has helped me practice my therapy skills on broader spectrum.
The Experience
I enjoyed working with my cohort as they were very friendly and helpful. My senior coach and lead were extremely kind to help me out each time with different clients and provided me with feedback.
Takeaways & Recommendations
I have been taught a lot more than I ever imagined. The exposure to clients, those clinical techniques and clinical supervision were really valuable as they taught me everything in practice rather than studying it as just a degree. I can make sense of education taught to me in university and link it to real-life client scenarios to see the actual difference it makes in people life.

At my time at Overcome, it made me realised that I can pursue in clinical aspect and see people and help them out. This was massively helpful because before i never considered my career around people or any clinical aspect.
